The remains of a Byzantine mosaic floor from the chapel can be seen on display at Capernaum (see Map 7 ). This chapel and a small adjoining monastery were abandoned in the 7 th century. Jesus’s teaching of the Beatitudes was commemorated at the end of the 4 th century by a small Byzantine chapel built beside the main road at En Tabgha near Capernaum. These eight ‘blessings’ have become known as the ‘Beatitudes’ (from the Latin for ‘ blessed’). Jesus teaches people how to be blessed by God:īlessed are those who are humble before God for they will enter the kingdom of heaven.īlessed are those who are saddened by immorality and dishonesty for they will be comforted by the Holy Spirit.īlessed are those who are compassionate and forgiving for they will realise that the whole world belongs to God.īlessed are those who hunger after honest and sincere relationships for they will have all their needs met.īlessed are the merciful who forgive others for God will forgive them.īlessed are those with pure motives in their heart for God will be their inspiration.īlessed are the peacemakers for God will welcome them into his family.īlessed are those who are persecuted as a result of being honest for they walk in the ways of God. The Church of the Beatitudes, near En Tabgha (Matthew 5:1) His teachings become known as the ‘Sermon on the Mount’. He uses a natural amphitheatre above the lakeside to address the crowds who have gathered from Galilee, Jerusalem, Judaea and the Decapolis (the ten towns on the eastern bank of the River Jordan). 5:1-12 In the spring of 28AD, Jesus goes up onto a hillside overlooking the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee (see Map 7). That he should enter into, and interest himself in, what she had been, what sort of life she had led and was leading, - this was wonderful.Matt. This made her feel towards him as she had felt towards none other. Christ detected the moral significance of all she had done, and made all apparent to her in the light of a very tender, but a very faithful criticism. It is not to be imagined that the power of this revelation lay simply in its correspondence with the actual facts of the woman's life. Yet the text makes it plain that what chiefly produced conviction of Jesus' Messiahship was his penetration into her heart, his perusal of her history, his revelation to her of her own character, her own conduct, in the light of the Divine Law, and doubtless also in the light of his own pity and loving kindness. Declarations such as these could not but fill her mind with amazement, could not but raise her thoughts heavenwards.Ģ. She was an interested and thoughtful listener. All these revelations made, it is clear, an impression on the woman's mind. To her he communicated the glorious and ever-memorable truth, "God is a Spirit." To her he revealed the necessity of spiritual worship. To her he declared himself to be the "living water" which alone can assuage the thirst of humanity. It is noticeable that our Lord chose to utter to this woman of Samaria some of his sublimest revelations of religious truth. PERSONAL REVELATION THE CHIEF AGENCY IN PRODUCING CONVICTION.ġ. A great spiritual principle is here exemplified. It is most of all remarkable that what weighed chiefly with her, in arriving at a just conviction regarding the claim of Jesus, was his insight into her own life and character - his ability to reveal her to himself. The sympathetic spirit in which she received Christ's teaching her adroitness in changing the inconvenient course of the conversation, her vigorous action in directing the attention of the people of the city to the Divine Visitor, all indicate the woman's intelligence and independence. Thomson The narrative makes it evident that this Samaritan woman was a person of very decided character.
